Flystrike in rabbits
As part of our Wellness Plan, we offer a discount off Rearguard which is used to treat Flystrike in rabbits.
What is flystrike?
It happens when flies lay their eggs on your rabbit, and those eggs hatch out into maggots.
Flystrike is most common during the summer, but can occur any time of the year. Any rabbit with a dirty bottom is at high risk of flystrike. Dirty bottoms can be due to poor diet, accumulation of faeces or caecotrophs or because of joint conditions such as arthritis and their inability to clean themselves. Urine on your rabbit’s fur can also attract flies. If your rabbit has an injury, flies will be attracted to the smell of blood.
Flystrike is a very serious condition and can be fatal. However, rabbits can make a full recovery if the condition is found and treated quickly. Call us immediately if you are concerned.
