Experienced Equine (or Equine & Small Animal) Veterinary Surgeon – based here at Station House Vets, Malton near York
Station House Vets is a proudly independent, practice based near Malton, North Yorkshire. Our equine team is thriving, our facilities are expanding, and our clients are a joy to work with. We’re now looking for an experienced equine or mixed equine/small animal veterinary surgeon to join us in a role that can be shaped around your strengths, interests, and ambitions.
Whether you prefer predominantly equine, a true equine & small animal mix, or equine with light small animal work and support for the rest, we’re open to building the right role for the right person.
⭐ Why This Role Exists
Three years ago, we welcomed our first new graduate. Watching her grow into a confident, capable vet has been incredibly rewarding. Now she’s heading off to Australia for new adventures. We’re thrilled for her—but she leaves big shoes to fill. This is a genuine opportunity created by her departure.
🐴 What We’re Offering
A role with real influence:
• Opportunity to shape the future of our equine service, including clinical direction, caseload development, and use of our expanding facilities for horses, ponies and donkeys
• Potential to take on a leadership role within the equine team (supportive, collaborative—not hierarchical)
• Partnership potential for the right person in the future
⏰ Working pattern
• Full‑time preferred, but part‑time arrangements considered
• Typically a 4‑day week
• 1 in 4 or 5 weekend out‑of‑hours rota, with a sensible radius and well‑bonded clients
Independent practice benefits
• Complete clinical freedom
• Your ideas, initiatives, and CPD interests are encouraged and supported
• No corporate protocols, no sales targets
🐎 Equine Facilities & Equipment
You’ll have everything you need to work cases up properly:
• 8 stables, stocks, trot‑up lane, lunge ring
• Radiography box & padded knock‑down box
• Brand new Celtic SMR ultrasound
• DR X‑ray
• Video endoscope & gastroscope (successful monthly gastroscope clinics already established)
• Class 4 laser
• Two sets of modern dental kit
• In‑house lab and an excellent nursing team
• And importantly: if you can make a piece of kit work for the practice, we’ll seriously consider investing in it
🐕 Small Animal Work (Optional)
If you enjoy mixed practice, we can offer:
• A supportive small animal team including two certificate holders in medicine
• A varied caseload with the option to keep things simple or get involved more deeply
• Back‑up for surgery or complex cases if you prefer to focus on equine
🌟 What We’re Looking For
• 2–3+ years qualified (the role suits an experienced vet)
• Confident with routine equine work; interest in lameness, medicine, or dentistry welcomed
• Strong communication and client‑care skills
• Someone who wants to do a good job, enjoy their work, and be part of a supportive, friendly team
💚 What We Offer
• Competitive salary
• 5 weeks holiday + bank holidays
• BEVA, MRCVS & VDS paid
• Fully funded CPD
• Employee Assistance Programme
• Discounted veterinary care & free wellness plan for your own pets
• Bring your dog to work – staff kennels available
• A genuinely lovely client base—many long‑standing and deeply bonded with the practice
• A beautiful place to live and work, with a thriving equestrian community
🐴 A Few Words from our departing vet
“Station House Vets is the kind of practice you hope exists but rarely find. The team is supportive, the clients are wonderful, and you’re encouraged to grow into the vet you want to be. I’ve learned so much here and felt valued every step of the way. Leaving for Australia is bittersweet—I’m excited for my next adventure, but I’ll miss this place enormously.”
