Hives and horses

equine hives
Amelia talks about hives and horses.

Hives (also known as urticaria); is an allergic skin reaction. This can be to anything from stings, bites, bedding to even certain kinds of washing powder used to clean rugs.

Often the cause of the hives is not found. Most cases resolve in 24-72 hours, however they can persist.

Often in an acute case we would consider a one off dose of corticosteroid. At home you can gently bathe the skin or consider a gentle brush.

This picture is of my own horse after we had to change our bedding supplier due to covid induced shortages. As you can see the new bedding didn’t agree with his sensitive skin.

If you’re concerned your horse might have hives, give the equine team a call on 01653 618303.
