Feline blood pressure
Remember that blood pressure measurement for cats is free for those on the Wellness Plan (otherwise £30.97).
It is a good idea to check blood pressure on older cats – some advice says from the age of 7-8years old, but certainly from 10 years old.
There are no early signs of high blood pressure but long-term effects include damage to eyes, brain, heart and kidneys. It can be treated, and any underlying cause for it also investigated.
Blood pressure can be measured in a nurse clinic with no need for sedation.
It involves a cuff being fitted around the cat’s leg or tail and inflated and deflated much like it used to be done in human medicine! We allow extra time to help the cat settle and avoid stress related to being ‘at the vets’ (and allow for some increase in blood pressure being because of this anyway).
