Pain Awareness Month 2026
September is Animal Pain Awareness Month, and this coincides with human medicine’s Pain Awareness Month
Animals suffer from pain just like people do. Pain comes in many forms: surgical pain, arthritis and cancer related pain, just to name a few.
Acute pain is obvious and distressing. Chronic pain can be subtle, and masked as “getting old” or “slowing down.” Old age is not a disease, but pain is.
There are many options to treat the various causes of pain in animals including pain medications, physical rehabilitation, acupuncture, laser therapy, and therapeutic massage.
Here at Station House Vets we offer the following services to aid with Pain Management for your pets and horses:
Physiotherapy
Katie is in our in house veterinary physiotherapist for small animals and horses.
Veterinary Physiotherapy is a science-based profession that takes a holistic approach to each patient based on individual needs. It is used alongside veterinary medicine to help in the treatment of musculoskeletal and neurological conditions. It assists in rehabilitation and aims to control and relieve pain, restore function and improve movement.
Acupuncture
Vicky is our in house veterinary acupuncture specialist for acupuncture in small animals.
Acupuncture utilises the body’s nervous system to block pain signals and encourage the central nervous system to release natural painkillers. In non painful conditions acupuncture can help to reset the body to normal functioning.
Laser
Our team are all qualified in laser therapy for horses and small animals.
This is a non-invasive therapy used instead of or as well as drug therapy for the treatment of chronic pain. Osteoarthritis is one of the most common causes of chronic pain and we have great success managing this condition.
Shockwave
Our equine vets are qualified in shockwave therapy for horses.
Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive therapy that uses pulses of energy to trigger an increased metabolism, boosting collagen production and releasing signalling chemicals to fight inflammation and accelerate tissue regeneration. It is a safe alternative to surgery and replaces outdated firing and blistering.
