Neutering : spay & castration services for your rabbit

Neutering is one of the most important steps in maintaining your rabbit’s long-term health and wellbeing. Our independent practice is committed to providing safe, compassionate care tailored to the unique needs of rabbits—whether they are indoor companions, outdoor explorers, or both.

Why neutering your rabbit is recommended

    • Health protection Spaying female rabbits removes the risk of uterine cancers and pyometra (pus within the uterus), both potentially fatal conditions. It also reduces the chance of mammary tumours. Castrating male rabbits prevents testicular cancer and limits prostate issues.
    • Behavioural management  Neutering can limit mounting, urine-marking, aggression and territorial behaviours, this is particularly important when bonding rabbits allowing them to live in pairs safely. It also removes the possibility of phantom pregnancies in female rabbits – during which they may display aggressive tendencies to other rabbits and owners.
    • Responsible breeding control  Neutering helps prevent unplanned litters and limits large numbers of rabbits requiring new homes / going into rescues.

When to neuter your rabbit

    • Male rabbits  As soon as both testicles are present within the scrotum (approximately 10-12wks). If both do not descend (cryptorchid), we will need to perform a slightly different operation to find the undescended testicle.
    • Female rabbits  From 6 months of age – this is due to it being a bigger operation than for the male rabbits. Rabbits can become pregnant from 4 months of age, so care needs to be taken that they are not housed with entire male rabbits (including littermates).

What to expect:

Pre-op information : We will discuss the surgery, what to expect and how to keep your rabbit comfortable whilst with us (you can bring their bonded friends and favourite foods in). Rabbits, unlike cats and dogs, can continue eating until they have their procedures
Admission : We will examine your rabbit, answer any final questions you may have, then get them (and any accompanying rabbits) settled into the hospital
Surgery & monitoring : Anesthesia plans are made for each individual rabbit. Your rabbit is carefully monitored throughout their surgery and as they recover by our team
Same day discharge : Most rabbits go home on the day of their surgery
Aftercare instructions : At discharge we will discuss clear instructions on rest, medication (post-op pain relief) and wound care, and teach you how to syringe feed your rabbit
Follow-up checks : Post op appointments (usually at 2 and 10 days) allow us to ensure your rabbit is healing as expected and discuss any concerns you may have.
